Pruning, in horticulture, that is, the removal or reduction of parts of a plant, tree or vine that are not necessary for growth or production, are no longer pleasing to the eye or are harmful to the health or development of the plant. Pruning occurs when branches are selectively removed from a tree. The goal is to eliminate unwanted branches, improve the structure of the tree and direct new, healthy growth. Cutting occurs when the surface is cut smoothly, such as in hedges in boxes.
It can help shape a shrub and promotes the formation of shrubs. When a gardener selectively chooses which branches to trim a plant or shrub, it's called pruning. By doing this, the gardener can control the development and growth of the plant in certain patterns. The branch (or shoot) of woody plants has a terminal bud at the end; this determines the specific pattern or position of the buds and the future growth of the branches.

A tree with a large amount of dead wood along the crown looks more aesthetically pleasing if the dead wood is removed.
